Black denim vests and jeans were extremely popular in the 1980's and early 1990's, they're weren't found for several years on the fashion catwalks.  Why... you may ask?  Well, styles tend to come and go.

Let's discuss a black denim vest...  Generally speaking, denim vests are durable, and they're easy to clean.  While they might not exactly be "high fashion", they are nonetheless still popular, and have been for quite some time. 

These days it seems bikers, metal heads, punk rockers, and Anarchists are who's keeping the black denim vest alive, and often instead of calling it a "black denim vest", they call it a "kutte". 

The word kutte is derived from the German word "kutten", which means "cut-off"; because they are in fact sometimes jackets with the arms 'manually' cut or ripped off - in a similar way to cut-off jeans.

In the punk subculture, people design their black denim vests with  metal studs and badges (often painted-on) of bands or political causes, with cloth patches being secondary – ultimately to the difficulty of doing the required needlework on the thick denim.

As part of the DIY philosophy of the hardcore punk scene, the vests may be home-repaired with safety pins, and the band logos may be put on using paint and crude home-made stencils. Some wearers may also drape chains or other paraphernalia from the vest.

A black denim vest in the heavy metal scene are oftentimes adorned with patches of logos and album covers of bands, ranging in size from small square patches to large patches that fill the back of the vest.

Patches are the main decoration, however, some Heavy Metal vests have studs on them, particularly for fans of crossover hardcore-metal bands such as mid-1980's era Metallica or of thrash metal.

So... if you heard that vests were making a comeback, you heard right.  The black denim vest certainly has its place, and it definitely has its devotees.
